BLOCKBUSTER CONNECTED TV APP is being developed by 3SS, more innovations to come

Nordic video services platform Blockbuster, owned by Denmark’s TDC Group, was looking for a technology partner to deliver a roadmap of innovations to enhance its offering for viewers. Critically, it also wanted to find new ways to improve the business potential of its high value content assets. First, Blockbuster needed a new replacement Connected TV App, with a dramatic improvement in performance, usability and monetization prospects. They selected 3SS and now Blockbuster subscribers in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland who watch via connected TVs are to benefit from the new app, which is based on 3SS’ award-winning front end solution 3READY.


After studying the technology landscape, Blockbuster, owned by Denmark’s TDC Group, appointed 3SS as long-term development partner, to enhance service operation and user experiences for its subscribers across the Nordic region. The first project assigned to us was the delivery of a new replacement connected TV app which would perform better for viewers and increase commercialization possibilities of Blockbuster’s video content assets. We engineered the new app based on 3READY, our flagship solution proven to enable superior functionality and usability for subscribers, while delivering rich, actionable data and many other operational benefits to service providers.

3SS introduced new, value-adding features to the app’s UI. These include enhanced, more user-friendly navigation tools, the ability to bookmark, set up wish-lists, and get recommendations that are more meaningful and personally relevant. In parallel, for the first time, the Blockbuster marketing and operations teams can create, edit and display suggested and desired content while speedily and reliably accessing associated licensing and territory-specific asset data. Thanks to the core 3READY capabilities built into the new app, Blockbuster can now capture and rapidly interpret viewer behavior and data, enabling more powerful content and marketing promotions, but also ensuring up-to-the-minute account tracking and subscriber payment management.

Blockbuster assigned 3SS full leadership in the project, entrusting us to oversee the multi-stage deployment. 3SS helped to set functionality priorities, working closely with the Blockbuster in-house team. The agile development principles of SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) were key to success. SAFe is the practical experience-based software development framework designed to accelerate and optimize system deployments, increasingly being adopted in TV technology projects.

Subscribers in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland who watch Blockbuster on connected TVs made by Samsung, LG Web OS, Tizen, Netcast and Orsay are the first to benefit from the new app, with Panasonic and Philips TVs covered in subsequent phases.
