Next-gen Android TV UI powers Canal Digital’s OnePlace on Satellite and OTT

Canal Digital wanted a breakthrough UI for its new Android TV-based satellite and OTT platform. They chose us to help launch OnePlace, and to deliver a world-class TV experience to nearly 850,000 subscribers in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

The Solution

Canal Digital AS, the Nordic region’s largest multichannel TV provider, wanted to take advantage of all the attractive features of today’s Android TV for its new satellite and OTT offering. Canal Digital wanted an ultra-friendly set-top box UI that would deliver a seamless user experience between linear satellite, streamed and on-demand content, presenting all relevant and available channels in one single channel array, tailored to each subscriber. The solution needed to enable harmonized search across all available sources, including third party apps from Android and recommendations. A core goal was to help viewers get the most from Google’s rich Android TV feature set, including Google Cast, Google Play Store and Google Assistant for voice control and unified search across all apps with prioritized results. We delivered, and the next-gen UI went live in February 2018. In 2019, a year on after launch, the innovations keep coming. OnePlace now offers subscribers these extra functionalities:

  • Start-over for additional viewing convenience
  • “Coming soon” teaser promotions to highlight future content assets which subscribers will be able to view when available
  • Display of already-subscribed services, so the user knows at a glance whether an item of content or service is already a component of his or her package

The commercial potential and attractiveness of OnePlace has been further enhanced with the “MixPanel” analytics tool which enables Canal Digital to capture and interpret user behavior on all devices. Now, Canal Digital can offer subscribers cross-platform promotions closely aligned with individual viewing preferences.

Additionally, we helped Canal Digital to embrace today’s cutting-edge development principles including SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) which are transforming Canal Digital’s ability to deliver great new services more rapidly. Through regular workshops, concurrent work streams, project update sessions, all parties know the status of objectives and where they are in the progress of a detailed roadmap of deliverables.
