Cutting-edge principles including SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) are transforming Canal Digital’s ability to deliver the services consumers crave

OnePlace subscribers in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland are enjoying enhanced user experiences on their PVRs thanks to ongoing service innovation

Stuttgart, Germany – 19 February, 2019 – 3 Screen Solutions (3SS), leading provider of software solutions for set-tox box (STB) and multiscreen digital entertainment, announces that it has helped Canal Digital AS to transform its business by introducing agile software and product development methodologies.

Launched in February 2018, Canal Digital’s OnePlace service delivers next-generation UHD entertainment on STBs and PVRs, based on Android TV, via satellite and OTT to viewers in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. As part of the deployment, 3SS delivered a custom launcher for a powerful, engaging Android TV user experience.

New UI features

Now Netflix-integrated, OnePlace is deploying a raft of new features to meet the expectations of viewers. Recent enhancements include:

  • Start-over for additional viewing convenience
  • “Coming soon” teaser promotions to highlight future content assets which subscribers will be able to view when available
  • Display of already-subscribed services, so the user knows at a glance whether an item of content or service is already a component of his or her package

Advanced analytics, more commercialization opportunities, better management control

With the help of 3SS, Canal Digital has also enhanced the business potential and attractiveness of OnePlace by deploying “MixPanel,” a proven analytics tool which enables Canal Digital to capture and analyze user behavior across devices. As a result, marketing teams can offer OnePlace subscribers new cross-platform promotional offers closely aligned with individual viewing patterns and preferences. The interface between content management systems and subscriber management is also much improved, ensuring Canal Digital’s in-house commercial teams have up-to-the-minute and accurate billing and payment data.

Adoption of SAFe is enabling speedier enhancement rollouts

Furthermore, Canal Digital has transformed its internal product development processes by embracing the latest principles of agile development, introduced to the company by 3SS.

At the core of today’s truly agile development is “SAFe” (Scaled Agile Framework) the practical experience-based software development framework designed to accelerate and optimize system deployments. Regular workshops, concurrent work streams, and rigorously organized project update sessions help inform and motivate all stakeholders in a project – all parties know the status of objectives and where they are in the progress of a detailed roadmap of deliverables.

Henke Erichsen, Canal Digital CTO & CIO, said: “The scaled agile development methodology (SAFe) has been a revelation, and it has ignited a revolution in the way we approach product- and technology development at company level. With SAFe, we now have a much more transparent, predictable and efficient development process, and our subscribers are reaping the benefits.”

“OnePlace continues to go from strength to strength,” Kai-Christian Borchers, Managing Director at 3SS, commented. “Canal Digital has delivered even more innovation, and we are proud that 3SS contributions, from introducing SAFe to further unlocking the potential of Android TV, are enhancing the experiences of subscribers.”

3SS is widely acknowledged as the go-to experts for Android TV based STB and multiscreen satellite, IPTV/OTT and cable platforms. 3SS delivered the world’s first major Android based TV platform (AOSP) for Swisscom in 2014 and has since designed and engineered Android TV offerings for customers worldwide.
